CST 300 Module 4

Part One: Set Your Educational Goals

The number one and most important goal in the CSUMB computer science online program is to finish and obtain a degree in computer science. I never once in my life thought it would be possible for me to have a college degree so the fact that I am one step closer to it is unbelievable to me. But before I can achieve my ultimate goal of completing my degree I will need to start setting smaller goals so that I can take small steps in accomplishing my ultimate goal. I need to start doing an activity list so that I can really focus on what's important. One thing that I read that really interested me in the module reading's was setting  Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time (SMART) goals. These are goals you can track and manage over a shorter time period to see how you are progressing. By keeping low level goals it actually encourages progress since you can attain these goals much faster. One small personal current  goal of mine is to pass this class. And as it states in the article I should make my next goals harder. So maybe I can aim to try and get A's and B's in my classes instead of just passing them alone.

Part Two: Set Your Career Goals

As far as career goals for me it is a bit tricky because I still am not quite sure on what path I want to take. I currently work in the aerospace industry and that is something I love doing, but I also wouldn't mind trying something new as well. Even in my current Job title there is still so much I would love to learn as well. If I had to set a current quick career goal right now it would be to grow into more of of a lead position in my job. I can do that by taking on more responsibilities my training my coworkers, learning new skills, and communication. As far as my current ultimate goal in my career would be to have my own business. The idea of  not having to work under anyone is something I have always wanted to do. Whether that be as a web applications developer or in the aerospace industry it doesn't matter the thought of working for myself would be a dream come true.

Part Three: Take a wild guess of your percentile of the ETS Computer Science test

At the moment I would do fairly poor on the test. I have not studied programming in years, so I I would really need to hard study especially in regards to data structures and algorithms. I only took a basic computer architecture class and that was a couple years ago so that would be really tough as well. If I had to pick a percent it would be in the 50% and under.

Part Four: Keep Up With Your Learning Journal

This week I learned ethics based arguments in regards to technology and how to set shorter and attainable goals. The essay/outline this week was a bit tough since we had to find and issue that are technology related and can be argued by two different stake holders. So far I am going with something AI (Artificial Intelligence) related since that is always a controversial subject in regards to technology. It is an issue that can do a lot of good for people and can also be dangerous as well. These AI machines are extremely efficient that can speed production, never stop running, fast decision making, and rarely give errors. If the machine is programmed to do a task it will do as efficiently as possible at great speeds with little to no error. Just recently I saw a robot at Jamba Juice. However the idea itself had issues that a machine can not detect. For example inside the booth it was very unsanitary with bugs flying around and even worse it bugged and didn't dispense the smoothie. These machines are not aware of ethics, morals, the right, or the wrong. The machines can break down and give unpredictable results as well. It has been very interesting seeing all the pros and cons of AI.

  1. Hey Erik, both your educational and career goals sound great! I think I get where you're coming from since neither of my parents went to college, I don't think my dad even went to high school, so I wasn't always sure that college would be necessary. However, a lack of clear goals and low motivation led me to be stuck in community college for like five years where I also waited tables at a local restaurant. The money was already decent but working in customer service for that long made me regret not taking school seriously. Anyway... I'm sure we've both had our setbacks and challenges but we've only got 2 years left so let's finish strong!
